Parkop said the Motu-Koitabu people should always be respected and given recognition and consideration in every development and change taking place.

He said under the programme launched by the National Capital District Commission in partnership with key ministry and agencies of government responsible for dealing with settlements and suburb upgrade programme, all Motu-Koitabu villages will be modernised under a different programme.

“We will soon be launching a modernisation programme for the Motu-Koitabu people to modernise their villages to ensure they have proper services like water and sewerage systems, electricity, roads and most importantly, proper housing.

“They are very important people because they are the traditional landowners of the land our capital city Port Moresby is sitting on,” Parkop said.

“We are all foreigners who came here to settle or do business or for whatever reasons.
“We must appreciate the fact that they are the traditional landowners of our capital city and give them the respect and recognition they deserve.”

Parkop launched a programme to turn settlements in NCD into suburbs yesterday.

The launching was attended by Lands and Physical Planning Minister and Moresby South MP Justin Tkatchenko, Minister for Housing and Urbanisation and Moresby Northeast MP John Kaupa, Community Development, Youth and Religion Minister Soroi Eoe, officials from Moresby Northwest open electorate, senior officers from the Lands and Physical Department, officers of urbanisation and other government agencies.
